OUR HISTORY

HARTLEY & DARLENE SMITH

Shadow Landa   Cooper Kirk

We believe we have provided many people with attractive, healthy, long-lived German Shepherds with very good temperament to enjoy. It all began in 1970 when we purchased Sheba for a pet and obedience. She achieved the CDX in her first 3 Open trials! Due to an elbow problem, Utility was not pursued because of the jumping required. Sheba lived 13 1/2 years and was a wonderful ambassador for the breed because of her super temperament. In 1971 we became interested in breeding and conformation showing, in addition to obedience. Sheba had many structural faults, so we purchased Landa (Haus Chloe's Xelanda CD - lines to Bernd v Kallengarten). Hence our Kennel Name SHEBLAND. Our first litter was in 1973 and on average we have one litter per year. Always, our goal is to breed German Shepherds that come as close as possible to the Breed Standard.

For many years we participated in both obedience trials and conformation shows, obtaining titles in both arenas. We handled our dogs ourselves in the early years, but as we age have engaged handlers to show our dogs the past several years . We have enjoyed much success with our dogs and we still very much enjoy participating. However, we are just as thrilled when the general public admire our dogs at mall days or parades.

We are located 20 minutes west of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada on 35 acres where our dogs enjoy plenty of freedom and exercise. Our kennel building with indoor/outdoor runs and 2 large paddocks are on 1 acre all fenced. On average we have 4 adults - all the dogs spend time in our house, go to the cottage, etc. We have a ring outside where we and friends socialize and train our dogs. During winter we train our dogs at a hall our local GSD club rents.

Our litters are whelped and raised in our house. Our puppies receive lots of socialization - exposure to lots of people, different sights and sounds, lots of handling - from 3 weeks old until they leave for their new homes at 8-12 weeks of age. We stress to the new owners the importance of continuing the socialization. If it isn't done at this young age, it cannot be re-captured. We encourage taking the pup to obedience classes so the owner learns how to control their dog. We are very critical of the homes our dogs go to. Owning a dog must be a committment for the lifetime of the dog. A German Shepherd deserves to be a companion - it thrives on human companionship.

Buyers of our pups deserve dogs with minimal problems physically and mentally. Longevity, health, character and temperament are very important whether the dog be a pet, show, working or breeding animal. Most of our dogs have reached 10-14 years of age. We have experienced some of the common problems in the breed like stomach bloat, panosteitus, weak ears, epilepsy, weak pasterns, cancer, heart problems, hip dysplasia, skin problems. Fortunately these problems have been very few in number. Good hips have dominated our breeding program because we believe in breeding dogs xrayed normal with pedigree depth of good hips. Our dogs are well known for their excellent temperament.

With each puppy sold, we provide a written contract of sale, vaccination certificate, pedigree and puppy care information. Our support continues as we encourage owners of our puppies to contact us with any questions or concerns they may have over the years.

We are among the founding members of the Ottawa & Area German Shepherd Dog Club and are very honoured to have been made the first Life Members of the Club. We have been very active in the Club which provides diverse activities for its pet owners as well as show, breeding and working enthusiasts. We are also long-time members of the German Shepherd Dog Club of Canada, the Ottawa Kennel Club, the Bytown Dog Obedience Club, the German Shepherd Dog Club of America and are Life Members of the Canadian Kennel Club.

German Shepherds are a major part of our lives and we have made many wonderful friends as a result.
